Shoddy Headband

Description

Headband for Skyrim cosplay. I made this last year (almost exactly one year ago in fact: March 2015), at the same time I started working on my axe so this can also be considered my first prop (especially since my axe still isn't finished! Procrastination!). I used worbla and thin craft foam for the main band. The big middle gem is resin cast and the two smaller ones are just glass half domes I bought and painted blue.

The resin casting was a lot easier than I thought it would be. My mold was of questionable quality, but held up ok (it was thick cardboard).

I made a cardboard template that I transferred to the craft foam, cut that out and covered the foam in worbla. Then I glued on the gems and added more layers of foam and worbla on top. The big red gem has a small mirror glued behind it, to make it look a bit more shiny. That was a good idea actually :D
After that I taped off the gems and primed the crown. Then I spray painted it in a few different shades of gold, and added a bit of black to add some depth.

This was my first time working with worbla and I made many mistakes. I overheated it at some points etc. It turned out serviceable, but if the rest of the costume ends up looking nice, I'll probably remake it as I'm not really happy with it and I now have a much better idea on how I would make this. At the time I was really just making it up as I went along.

It looks shoddy :dummy:

This is great! You say you made many mistakes, but it's a learning process and something we can add to our experience.

I find the domes quite interesting because they do reflect a little. When I first looked at this, I thought it was pretty huge...and still do. It is difficult to get a sense of scale, but there is depth from how you have spray painted it all. :D
